Use capacity as a workflow measure
This chart is a physical planning aid, not nutrition or portion-control advice. Start with a meal or batch you already make, measure the amount you normally store, and compare that volume with the usable dimensions of your freezer shelf.
Piece counts can be misleading because a “14-piece” set may include seven bases and seven lids. Record the number of usable bases, the capacity of each base and the exterior footprint when stacked.

Shallow rectangle
Easy to stack and scan. A broad surface can suit complete meals and refrigerator thawing.
Deep square
Compact footprint for soups or components, but check fill level and reheating route.
Compartment tray
Keeps components separated, while fixed dividers reduce flexibility for bulky foods.
Flexible bag or tray
Can reduce empty-storage bulk or form repeatable portions, but filling and stacking behavior varies.
Measure before choosing a set
- Measure usable shelf width, depth and height—not the appliance’s advertised total capacity.
- Subtract clearance needed for drawers, vents and easy removal.
- Choose one recurring footprint and calculate how many fit across and high.
- Test the actual meal volume with a measuring cup before buying several matching pieces.
- Check the exact manufacturer instructions for freezing, reheating, lids and cleaning.
Capacity labels do not establish food-safety, freezer or reheating suitability. Those are model-specific claims. FoodSafety.gov recommends shallow containers for prompt cooling and provides separate cold-storage guidance for specific foods.
